(NBC) —
In their home opener against the Denver Broncos, the Miami Dolphins displayed an offensive masterclass on Sunday, thrashing them 70-20 and setting a record for the second-most points scored by a club in an NFL regular-season game.
The Chicago Bears set the NFL record for points in a single game in 1940 during the NFL Championship. Washington set the regular-season record in 1966 with 72 points.
The Dolphins had an opportunity to tie the Bears record and break the NFL regular season record late in the fourth quarter, but they chose to kneel rather than attempt a field goal from the Broncos’ 28-yard line.
We didn’t come here to chase records or points, as it didn’t feel like our purpose. The season’s final result is unaffected by that, according to Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. In certain cases, you give in and kneel ten times out of ten. That was amazing that there was an attainable record, but it didn’t convey the message I imagined it would because of the way I see the world.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Miami’s victory marks just the fourth occasion in NFL history that a team has scored at least 70 points, including playoffs.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the club to a 35-13 lead with a flawless first half, completing 16 of 16 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Since 1991, Tagovailoa has been the first quarterback to throw for more than 200 yards by halftime and complete more than 15 passes without a pass.
“This is unlike anything I’ve witnessed or experienced,” Tagovailoa remarked. It merely discusses our team’s resilience. I’m quite impressed with the lads for how they played, even though we were ahead at halftime. We obtained that outcome because nobody let up on the gas and everyone kept playing.
Miami broke a franchise scoring record by 15 points thanks to eight touchdowns from running backs Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane combined.
Mostert finished with 142 total yards, while Achane finished with 203 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Early in the fourth quarter, Tagovailoa and the majority of the team’s players were substituted out of the game. In the game, he completed 23 of 26 passes for four touchdowns.
With 726 yards overall, Miami breaks the team record for most yards in a game.
Sean Payton, head coach of the Broncos, called the game “tough to watch” and “embarrassing.”
“Although it would be easy to say, ‘Hey, let’s move on to the next game,’ we still need to watch that tape, so tomorrow is going to be difficult for many players—and for us, too, as coaches,” Payton continued.
Later in the press conference, while setting up his question, Payton yelled at a reporter who was going through some of the historic loss’s statistics.
“I understand. What inquiries are there? Payton said something. “What is the query? I’ve just concluded my story. The next query
The Bears crushed Washington 73-0 in the NFL Championship Game in December 1940. Late in the regular season, Washington defeated the New York Giants 72-41 in November 1966.
The Los Angeles Rams, playing the Baltimore Colts in 1950, were the only other team to score seventy points in an NFL game.
